When we’re younger, we’re always dreaming. Dreaming of that latest toy we saw on a commercial the other night, the next family vacation, or even how life will be when we’re driving, in school, or working. Dreaming shouldn’t stop just because we’ve grown up.
The other day a yoga session of mine ended with a meditation and we were to imagine ourselves doing something we’ve always dreamt of, but never thought to make it a reality. It reminded me of a TED talk I watched a while back and the saying “what would you do if you weren’t afraid?” The speaker of the TED Talk is an artist who turned an abandoned house into a giant chalkboard asking her neighbourhood “Before I die I want to ___.” You can actually create one of these in your own neighbourhood, too. If you know me from outside of my blog posts, then you’re fully aware that I’m a self-proclaimed “teaaholic”. Thus, it’s not surprising to learn the first thought I had in that relaxed moment was to own a tea shop.
Atmosphere filled with bright colours, teacup chandeliers, faint whistles from kettles, endless tea menu, coffee/espresso brewing for those who need a stronger start to their day, the scent of fresh baked goods, light chatter from guests, and soft jazz music playing through each speaker. I’ve thought of it all and have been for years.
At first I thought “Oh great! If this is my dream then what am I doing in advertising still?” Usually when this thought comes to mind, I realize other excuses that would stop me from pursuing my dream.
- “I don’t know where to begin.”
- “I don’t know how to run a business.”
- “I’m afraid of failing.”
However, I’m starting to realize that everything I’m currently doing in my life is leading me towards that final big dream of mine as opposed to steering me away. When the time comes I will already be filled with knowledge in how to advertise my business, gain and retain clients, market to certain demographics and more.
Being afraid stops us from dreaming and from reaching our goals. Give yourself some time each day to just stop what you’re doing and think of something that would truly make you happy. Take that moment and make it your next reality. Don’t ever give up on something that brings you happiness.
