As 2014 comes to an end I, like many, am looking back on the past year. This year unlike every year, I am thankful for all the incredibly talented and interesting people I get to learn about, talk to and having the opportunity to share stories and unique perspectives with the world.
As the Mohawk College Alumni Communications Coordinator I talk to a lot of grads on a daily, weekly and monthly basis. For 2014, here are few people who have made an impact on me:
This January for our 3rd edition of the Alumni E-Touch Online Magazine, we’ve decided to change up the format which will include not only great stories written by Mohawk students, but also a few video interviews with Mohawk grads. In the month of November, I had the opportunity to meet two grads who are the “face and voice” of The Hamilton Bulldogs. They took time out of their busy schedules to share how they got to where they are and what it’s like to have unique jobs as the play-by-play announcer and in-stand host. I also had the pleasure to speak with a strong and admirable grad who, when diagnosed with early on-set Parkinson’s disease, took it upon herself to start her own annual benefit event in support of research.
Every semester the Alumni office hires Alumni student employees to assist with a variety of things in the daily operations of the office and who without them we would only be able to do a fraction of the events, programs and communications that we produce yearly. Personally, I would like to take this opportunity for a special thank you to Storm Harding, who has helped to produce some of the best videos we’ve seen and enhanced the way we share our grads stories. I wish Storm the best of luck at his internship in January and look forward to continuing to follow his career and future projects as he leaves Mohawk in the spring of 2015.
Lastly, I rely heavily on many volunteers to help write and create for a variety of Alumni projects from social media to the Alumni magazines, and of course for the Alumni Blog. I love reading and sharing the variety of topics and perspectives our 20+ volunteer bloggers have brought to the Alumni Blog and look forward to 2015 when we will continue to share from Alumni of all ages, backgrounds and life experiences.
A few of my favourite posts (but by far not all) from 2014 include:
- Lu Ann sharing the experience of assisting her boyfriend in house hunting for his first house in “So you want to buy a house?”
- Sozanny reflecting on the expectations society places on many of us and her offering 3 tips for “Defining Success On You Own Terms”
- Lidia’s frank and extremely useful advice for ways to “Stop Sucking @Email”
- Brent’s experience working with and for many organizations offers the advice of collaboration and “Sharing Environments Equals Good Business”
Do you have a favourite Blog Post?
Or a topic you would like to write about? I am always looking to welcome more grads to the Alumni blogging family- just email me!
Cheers to a great year and I am looking forward to what amazing events and stories Mohawk Grads are going to share is 2015!
