Achieving a difficult task isn’t always about exerting large amounts of effort all at once, it is about making little changes every day to make sure that we are constantly taking small steps toward what we want to achieve and keeping your goals top of mind with every decision you make throughout the day.
If the overall goal is to run a marathon, getting off the couch and running 15k on your first time out will probably cause more harm than good and set you even further back from your goal. Running 5k every day on the other hand, is a tried and true way to build up stamina, encourage muscle memory and increase lung capacity. The effort we make each day makes reaching the finish line a whole lot easier.
Personal goals can be physical, emotional, experiential, financial or intellectual. In each of these subcategories there are many small changes you can make each day to move forward. Sometimes you need to take a step back, look at the big picture and adjust your sails accordingly. Today’s blog is all about me taking a moment to reflect on my current goals and hopefully encourage you to do the same.
Checking in daily with yourself and your task list is an effective way to stay on track and encourage personal growth. At a recent workshop I attended, the moderator suggested we ask ourselves these questions each day:
How do I feel today?
-health, energy level, overall emotion, motivation level
Where am I going/what goals do I have?
-personal, career, financial, emotional, intellectual, physical
What have I done today to get me closer to my goal?
– run, study, meditate, financial investments
Am I Happy?
-this is both the hardest and easiest question to answer, it’s either an immediate “YES” or “NO” or you sit and stew and think about it for ages and let the question eat away at you…
No one can answer these questions for you but I hope to leave you with this. Whatever it is that you want, if you work toward it each and every day in little ways, you will look back and be pleasantly surprised with the progress you have made. If you work wholeheartedly and with passion and nothing can stop you from achieving whatever you set your sights on. And remember, the time in-between checking goals off the list is called life, it is meant to be loved, lived and enjoyed.
